Molecular Beam Epitaxy

A central element of our research paradigm is the design and fabrication of new quantum materials using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). MBE grown thin films are particularly well suited for scanning tunnelling microscopy measurements and electric transport measurements.

The newest addition to our lab facilities is a home-designed MBE system, which will amplify our abilities to explore new materials, optimize the growth conditions, and simply churn out more samples. To this end, this system will be equipped with seven effusion cells and an electron-beam evaporator, a variable temperature (77-1500 K) sample manipulator, a 15 keV RHEED for growth monitoring, and a quartz crystal microbalance and beam flux monitor for deposition calibration.
